Definition - WJ Competency Index

The library plays an important role in people’s lives and in their communities, and therefore, it is important for library employees to understand this social responsibility. It is important for individuals to reflect and develop self-awareness about the values and ethics that guide their practice. Library staff:

  • Understand and act in accordance with the basic values and ethics of library service.

The Competency Index for the Library Field includes Ethics & Values on pages 9 & 10.

Training Needs Assessment Rankings

Ethics & Values ranked #17 out of 60 topics staff would like training in.  It was not identified as an urgent training need. 25% (30) of respondents indicated they would like training at the Beginner level, 37% (44) would like training at the Intermediate level, and 38% (45) would like training at the Advanced level.
