Bill of Rights Day
On this day in 1791, the Bill of Rights was officially ratified. The Bill of Rights is the first 10 amendments to the constitution, and focuses on individual rights and limits of the government. Some of these rights include freedom of speech, freedom of expression, the right to bear arms, the right to an attorney, and freedom from search without a warrant.

According to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (Homeland Security), understanding the Bill of Rights is also an important part of the naturalization test. During the naturalization interview, prospective citizens may be asked, “What do we call the first ten amendments to the Constitution?” as part of the civics test. Applicants may also be asked to read the words, “Bill of Rights,” during the English test.

On behalf of Bill of Rights Day, we would like to introduce the ALA's Library Bill of Rights. This is a list of basic policies for libraries to support our communities' First Amendment rights with access to information. For example, it is everyone's right to use the library and not be denied use because of their race, ethnicity, economic background, or views. Library collections reflect the First Amendment by providing books and resources that present all views on current and historical issues.
