National Dental Hygiene Month

(Information provided by the Bureau of Oral Health and Dental Services)

Who puts the Dental Hygiene in National Dental Hygiene Month?  More than 850 dental hygienists in Delaware, that's who!

You can find these hard-working, licensed professionals in your dental office, in public health screening programs such as Smile Check, community health centers, Delaware Technical & Community College's teaching program, and even in dental product sales and consulting.

Why is National Dental Hygiene Month important?

Having healthy teeth doesn’t just benefit your smile, it is important for your physical health and mental well-being, too.  No one likes a dirty mouth, especially when it's your own.  Keeping your oral health on track is a great way to keep bacteria at bay.  Did you know that white teeth do not equal good oral health?  Remember without proper dental hygiene, you put yourself at risk of developing issues such as tooth decay and gum disease.

How do Dental Hygienists help you maintain good oral health?

Although professionally cleaning your teeth, taking x-rays to determine if you have tooth decay or bone loss, and applying fluoride to your teeth might come to mind when you think about dental hygienists, think again!  Just as significant is the dental hygienist's role in teaching you how to maintain a healthy oral health routine at home in between your routine dental visits.  And what better time to think about your oral health routine than during October when we celebrate Halloween, the fun and spooky season, that often includes sugary treats.  Don't despair, healthier treat options are available to you and your family.  So, explore and celebrate with alternatives that are teeth-friendly.  And schedule an appointment with your dentist and dental hygienist.  For more information to help you learn how to guide your family's oral health and build healthy habits, view our Dental Resource Guide or call our Dental Helpline call 302-622-4540.

  Tips to Remember-

  • Brush and floss your teeth last thing at night and on at least one other occasion with a fluoride toothpaste.
  • Cut down on how often you have sugary foods and drinks.
  • Visit the dental hygienist no less than 1 time a year or as often as they recommend.
  • Start your healthy oral health routine today!
