Al Mills was born and raised in Wilmington, Delaware. A proud Army Veteran, husband, father, and grandfather. A licensed Social worker, and current Poet Laureate for the state of Delaware with his twin brother, State Representative N’namdi Chukwoucha (Twin Poets), Mills is an avid reader who writes daily and loves collecting old poetry books.
Mills proudly served our country in the U.S. Army. Mills says of his time in the military “[It] is still to this day one of the best parts of my life. The men and women I served with are now like brothers and sisters. So, I have this amazing extended family spread out all over the U.S. I got to travel and see the world – while making some amazing memories.” He also says “being in combat and in war at times, I, as well as many other veterans, am struggling with moral injury and PTSD as a result.”
Since his first job at thirteen, as a camp counselor at the Walnut Street YMCA, Mills community involvement remains a very important part of his life. “I grew up in grassroots, community-centered households where hard working middle class values were instilled in me by my parents and grandparents. So, giving back is a large part of my everyday life” says Mills who still works with at-risk youth and their families. “The children make me smile especially when they are allowed to just be children and have that wonderful excitement and joy in their eyes.”
