A Statement From:
The Delaware Library Association stands with the Black Lives Matter movement and all those standing against violence, racism, and white supremacy in our country. Our mission is to advocate for, empower, and educate a diverse library community. We unequivocally believe there is no room for racism in a library community that champions inclusivity.
We are committed to helping our patrons find the resources to meet their basic needs as well as ensure their safety. When systemic racism prevents our Black patrons access to these important tenets, it hinders our mission, and we must speak out.
We understand that libraries are typically thought of as neutral spaces, but we believe there is no neutrality in the face of injustice. We choose to connect in solidarity with our Black community. We stand with you, we are here for you, and we commit to listening and learning from you.
We know that libraries have work to do towards eliminating racism and de-centering whiteness in our spaces. As a start, we are sharing a list of anti-racist reading and other resources related to the Black Lives Matter movement to help us as we all strive to be anti-racist in our libraries and in our own lives.
We continue to be inspired by our library workers, our communities, and all those protesting the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and far too many other victims of police brutality.
We will be there alongside you as we all work to transform our society into a more just and equitable one.
Bryan Stevenson, Delaware author of "Just Mercy", makes an impassioned case for confronting racial and economic justice in the American justice system.
