Professional Development for Delaware Library Staff: Cataloging - 000 - CORE

Definition - WJ Competency Index

The efforts of catalogers enable users to locate what they need in the library collections. As the world of information evolved from physical materials occupying physical places to digital resources in a multiplicity of formats, catalogers have adapted with richer metadata sets, linking repositories and institutions, and delivering resources in-person and remotely. Cataloging staff:

  • Catalog all types of library materials according to relevant bibliographic control standards.
  • Manage the catalog to ensure that library users have optimal access to the collection.

The Competency Index for the Library Field includes Cataloging on pages 15 & 16.

Training Needs Assessment Rankings

Cataloging was identified as a CORE training need in the Training Needs Assessment.  It ranked #8 out of 51 self-identified urgent training needs.  It ranked #2 out of 60 topics staff would like training in.  49% (78) of respondents indicated they would like training at the Beginner level, 29% (47) would like training at the Intermediate level, and 21% (34) would like training at the Advanced level.

GMD

Big picture books

[big picture books] is not an official GMD value, but is displayed in a handful of records.

Big picture books are defined as being lightweight, softbound books that measure 16” x 20” or larger. They are colorfully illustrated, the print is large and they are designed for use in a group setting. Whether the audience is children or seniors, the books can be held up or placed on an easel so that the group can view the contents as the leader reads the story. Big books are great for story time or classroom use as well as for the individual reader who simply needs larger print and pictures to read a story.

A subject heading of "Big picture book" should be included in the bib record.
